How it's calculated

The calculator first resolves your footprint from either dimensions (length × width) or a direct entry, then multiplies it by a pitch multiplier — √(1 + (rise/run)²), where rise is whatever you selected per 12 inches of run — to get your roof's actual surface area. That's the step a footprint-only estimate skips. A waste percentage is added on top (10% by default — see the guidance below for why that's a starting point, not a sourced figure), and the adjusted area is divided by 100 to get squares, and independently by your bundle's coverage to get a bundle count, rounded up since a partial bundle still has to be bought.

Worked example

A 40 ft × 30 ft footprint (1,200 sq ft) at a 6/12 pitch: roof area = 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.6, about 1,342 sq ft — 12% more than the footprint alone. Adding the 10% waste default: 1,341.6 × 1.10 = 1,475.8 sq ft. In squares, that's 1,475.8 ÷ 100 = 14.76 squares. At a bundle coverage of 33.3 sq ft (suppose that's what your wrapper states): 1,475.8 ÷ 33.3 = 44.32 — rounded up to 45 bundles. Footprint vs. roof area, waste, and what's left out

The conversion is Pythagoras, not a published industry figure: a roof pitch of X/12 means the roof rises X inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run, so a right triangle with legs X and 12 has a hypotenuse — the actual roof surface, per 12 inches of footprint — of √(X² + 12²). Dividing by the run (12) gives the multiplier this calculator applies: √(1 + (X/12)²). That's why this needs no citation, the same reason 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard needs none — it's a fixed geometric fact, not a number that varies by supplier or product, and any reader can check it themselves rather than trust a table. At 2/12 the multiplier is about 1.014; at 4/12 about 1.054; at 6/12 about 1.118; at 8/12 about 1.202; at 10/12 about 1.302; and at 12/12 about 1.414 — each computed from the formula above, not read off a stored table, so a reader can verify any of them by hand.

Waste percentage on this page starts at 10%, and that number deserves more scrutiny than most defaults on this site get. The figure commonly quoted for roofing — 10% for a simple roof, 15% for something complex — traces back to the NRCA Roofing Manual, a paid industry publication.
