It handles pavers only: base gravel and bedding sand each have their own calculator on this site, so nothing here estimates depth or density for either — see the guidance below for why splitting them out matters. How it's calculated

The calculator resolves your area from either patio dimensions (length × width) or a direct entry, then adds a waste percentage on top — covering cut waste from your pattern, which the guidance below explains varies far more by layout than by paver size. That waste-adjusted square footage is divided two independent ways: by your selected paver's area to get a paver count, and by your pallet's coverage to get a pallet count. Each is rounded up separately and computed straight from the same waste-adjusted area — the paver count doesn't feed into or depend on the pallet count, or vice versa.

Worked example

A 200 sq ft patio in 4×8 standard brick pavers, at the 10% default: waste-adjusted area = 200 × 1.10 = 220 sq ft. At 0.222 sq ft per paver, that's 220 ÷ 0.222 = 990.99 — rounded up to 991 pavers. At a supplier-quoted pallet coverage of 100 sq ft per pallet, that's 220 ÷ 100 = 2.2 — rounded up to 3 pallets. Both counts come from the same 220 sq ft independently — the paver count doesn't depend on the pallet count or vice versa. Rock and Block's own example checks out the same way: 100 sq ft of 4×8 pavers before waste is 100 ÷ 0.222 = 450.45, consistent with the roughly 450 pavers they cite.

Pattern, pallet coverage, and the base underneath

Pattern is the single biggest driver of how much waste to add, more than the paver itself. A running bond or stack bond — courses of pavers laid straight, offset or not — cuts only at the edges of the patio, so waste sits near the low end of the published range. A 45° herringbone or a curved border cuts pavers at an angle throughout the entire field, not just the edges, and every diagonal cut produces a triangular offcut too small to reuse elsewhere. Left Coast Pavers recommends 10% for straight patterns and up to 20% for diagonal or complex designs — that's the range this calculator's waste note is built around. Neither of the two sources behind this page's paver-count and waste numbers is a paver manufacturer, and that's deliberate: no paver manufacturer publishes a waste figure, and Techo-Bloc's own installation guide places the responsibility for calculating and purchasing the correct amount squarely on the installer. Treat the 10% default as a starting point for a simple layout, not a guarantee — increase it for anything with diagonal cuts or a curved edge.

Pallet coverage is this calculator's editable field, not a footnote — the same treatment sod's pallet field and the flooring calculators' box-coverage field both got. Belgard makes its Dimensions line at multiple plants across the country, and its own product pages state that square footage and weight per pallet can differ by plant, for the same paver, depending on which one produced it. That's a manufacturer saying pallet coverage varies within its own product line — a stronger version of the sod pallet story and the flooring carton story already on this site. There's no default here that pretends to be standard; get the real figure from your supplier's quote, not from a calculator.

Order pavers from a single production batch where possible. Color varies between batches of the same product — even the same SKU — so a patio built from two batches can show a visible seam where the colors don't quite match, especially once weathering starts. Ask your supplier to confirm a batch (sometimes called a lot or run) before splitting an order across multiple deliveries. Pavers are also sold both ways — individually and by the pallet — depending on the supplier, which is part of why this page shows both counts rather than assuming one is the unit you'll actually buy in.

This calculator only counts pavers and pallets — it doesn't estimate the compacted aggregate base or the bedding sand layer underneath, on purpose. Both matter more than the pavers themselves for how the finished patio actually holds up: a paver surface is only as stable as what's under it, and rutting, settling, and uneven joints are almost always a base problem, not a paver problem. For thickness, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI, now part of the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association) publishes 2 3/8" (60mm) pavers as its guidance for pedestrian and residential driveway use, and 3 1/8" (80mm) for vehicular traffic, with a 1-1 1/2" bedding sand layer beneath. ICPI describes its Tech Specs as guidance, not a standard, and this page follows that same framing — for anything load-bearing or commercial, confirm the base design and paver thickness with a qualified engineer rather than a calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Using a straight-pattern waste percentage for a 45° herringbone or curved-border layout — the diagonal cuts alone can push waste toward the high end of the published 5-20% range.
  • Ordering pavers across multiple production batches without confirming the batch. Color varies batch to batch even within the same SKU, and a mismatched seam is hard to fix after installation.
  • Guessing pallet coverage instead of getting it from a supplier's quote. Belgard's own pages say coverage per pallet can differ by which plant produced it — there's no standard figure to fall back on.
  • Skipping the compacted base and bedding sand layer, or assuming this calculator covers them. It doesn't, on purpose — see the gravel and sand calculators for those, and the guidance above for why the base matters more than the pavers.
  • Assuming ICPI's published depths are a code requirement. They're guidance the institute itself doesn't call a standard — check your local building department for anything load-bearing or commercial before finalizing a base design.

Where the figures come from

Rock and Block works the paver-count method directly: a 4×8 paver covers 0.222 sq ft, so a 100 sq ft patio needs about 450 pavers before waste, plus 5-10% for cuts. Left Coast Pavers, an installation company, is the source for the waste range's pattern dependence — 10% for straight patterns, up to 20% for diagonal or complex designs. Neither is a paver manufacturer, and that's deliberate: no paver manufacturer publishes a waste figure, and Techo-Bloc's own installation guide puts the responsibility for calculating the correct amount on the installer. FAQ

How much extra should I order for waste?
Published guidance runs 5-20%, and pattern is what moves you along that range. Left Coast Pavers recommends 10% for straight running-bond or stack-bond patterns and up to 20% for diagonal (45° herringbone) or curved-border designs, since every diagonal cut produces an unusable offcut. This calculator defaults to 10% — raise it if your layout has diagonal cuts or a curved edge.
Why doesn't a paver manufacturer publish a waste figure?
Waste depends almost entirely on the pattern and the shape of the space, not the paver itself — a figure a manufacturer could publish for every layout doesn't really exist. Techo-Bloc's own installation guide puts the responsibility for calculating the correct amount on the installer. This page's waste guidance comes from two hardscape installation sources instead, who see the pattern-driven variation directly.
Why doesn't pallet coverage have a preset like paver size does?
Paver size is a fixed product dimension — a 6×9 paver is exactly 6×9 inches everywhere it's sold, no citation needed. Pallet coverage isn't like that: Belgard's own Dimensions page states that square footage per pallet can differ by which plant made it, for the same paver. There's no standard number to preset, so this field stays a plain editable input — get the real figure from your supplier's quote.
Does this calculator include the paver base or bedding sand?
No, deliberately. Base gravel and bedding sand each already have their own calculators on this site, with their own waste factors — see the gravel and sand calculators. Combining all three into one page would mean juggling three separate waste factors on a single form instead of one clear number per material.
