How it's calculated

The calculator resolves your area from either room dimensions (length × width) or a direct entry, then adds a waste percentage on top — 15% by default, covering cut waste, acclimation loss, and the stricter grain and color culling hardwood installation calls for. That waste-adjusted square footage is divided by your box's coverage and rounded up to a whole box, since a partial box still has to be bought. Box coverage is a number you set yourself, not a fixed constant, because it varies by species, plank width, and manufacturer — check the coverage printed on your actual carton before ordering.

Worked example

A 300 sq ft room — the same size as the laminate calculator's example, for comparison — at the 15% hardwood default: waste-adjusted area = 300 × 1.15 = 345 sq ft. At the calculator's default 20 sq ft per box, that's 345 ÷ 20 = 17.25 — rounded up to 18 boxes. The laminate calculator's 10% default on the same room and coverage needs only 17 boxes — the extra 5 percentage points for hardwood's acclimation loss and stricter culling adds a full box on a room this size. Check your specific product's actual carton coverage rather than this page's round default; hardwood carton coverage varies by species, width, and manufacturer the same way laminate's does.

Acclimation, subfloor, and installation guidance

Hardwood needs to acclimate to the room it's being installed in before installation, not just before delivery — boxes are typically left unopened in the installation space for a period so the wood's moisture content equalizes with the room's actual conditions, since wood that's too wet or dry when installed will shrink or expand afterward and open gaps or buckle. How long that takes and under what conditions varies by product and climate, and it's exactly the kind of installation-specific instruction the manufacturer's own installation guide and NWFA's guidelines cover — check both rather than assuming a fixed number of days.

Subfloor moisture is a related but separate check. Concrete slabs and even wood subfloors can hold more moisture than they appear to, and installing hardwood over a subfloor that's too wet is one of the more common causes of cupping, buckling, or adhesive failure months after a job looks finished. A moisture test with a meter appropriate to the subfloor type is standard practice before installation, not an optional extra step, and the acceptable moisture level depends on the specific flooring product and subfloor combination — the manufacturer's spec and NWFA guidance cover that, not a generic number.

How a hardwood floor is attached changes what else the job needs, separate from the volume math this calculator handles. Nail-down is the traditional method for solid hardwood over a wood subfloor, using a fastener and spacing the manufacturer specifies. Glue-down bonds the flooring directly to the subfloor — common over concrete, and dependent on using the adhesive the manufacturer specifies rather than a generic construction adhesive. Floating installations aren't attached to the subfloor at all; the planks lock together as a connected layer sitting on top of an underlayment, common for engineered hardwood and useful over a subfloor that can't be nailed or glued into. None of the three is universally correct — the right method depends on the product, the subfloor, and sometimes local practice, and the manufacturer's installation instructions specify which methods a given product supports.

Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood through its full thickness, which is what allows it to be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life, but also what makes it more sensitive to moisture and temperature swings — it's typically nailed down over a wood subfloor and isn't usually recommended below grade or over concrete without extra precautions. Engineered hardwood has a real hardwood wear layer bonded over layers of plywood or high-density fiberboard, which makes it more dimensionally stable across humidity swings and installable over concrete or below grade in cases solid hardwood isn't, at the cost of fewer refinishing cycles over its life since the wear layer is thinner than solid wood's full thickness. This page doesn't yet have sourced hardwood-specific carton figures to offer as quick-pick presets the way the laminate page does for Pergo's and Mohawk's laminate/LVP lineups — showing those numbers here would misattribute a different product's data, so the coverage field ships editable with a plain 20 sq ft starting point and no presets until real hardwood figures are sourced.
